ACHE of Paraguay, South America
/ Taylor University
On the edge of humid forests in southeastern Paraguay, about 1,280 Aché
people live in small, wooden houses in six different communities. Most of the
people are hunter-gatherers though some keep gardens. Others work in nearby
fields or sell handicrafts. Aché men use large bows and arrows to hunt wild game
such as armadillos, paca and monkeys, while women and children gather honey,
palm fiber and fruit. The Aché place a high value on brotherhood and share their
goods and food as a community. They work together to clear forests for
gardens, construct houses and transport heavy items. Most people bathe and
wash their clothes in the river, but three of the communities now have tanks
providing clean water.
The Aché began converting to Christianity after leaving the jungle to live near
Spanish-speaking Paraguayans. Missionaries started working among them, and
currently 10 to 40 percent of the Aché population is Christian. Though the Aché
are maturing in their faith, they continue to hold on to some old beliefs. One
example of this is their reference to the Holy Spirit as krei, a spirit of the forest
that has a different character and personality than the Holy Spirit of the
Scriptures. Christians study the Spanish Bible every Sunday, but many Spanish
words are unclear to them. They need the Scriptures in their own language so
that they may grow spiritually as they read and understand the Word of God.
